Milwaukee Brew Is Expected to Be Retired

Share

It doesn’t appear that Milwaukee Brew will get the opportunity to become the first three-time winner of the Santa Anita Handicap.

The hero in the race in 2001 and 2002, Milwaukee Brew probably is going to be retired after exiting Sunday’s Pacific Classic with an injury to his left front ankle.

One of two horses trainer Bobby Frankel saddled in Del Mar’s signature race, the 6-year-old, owned by Frank Stronach, finished last in the field of four. The injury helps explain why he wasn’t able to finish in front of the outclassed Fleetstreet Dancer.

Despite his poor performance Sunday, Milwaukee Brew has won a third of his 24 starts and earned nearly $2.9 million.

Another Frankel runner who disappointed during a lost weekend for the country’s leading trainer is finished.

Sea Of Showers, who finished last as the 13-10 favorite in Saturday’s $200,000 Ballston Spa Breeders’ Cup Handicap at Saratoga, has been retired. Owned by Flaxman Stable, she won five of nine and earned $161,555.

Race of the day: Garden in the Rain, who has been first, second or third in 19 of 29 starts on the turf, makes her first appearance since May 26 for trainer Jeff Mullins in today’s seventh at Del Mar. The $68,000 optional claimer, at 1 1/16 miles on grass, also attracted the Mullins-trained Top Spinner, Madame Boulangere, Carbon Copy, Adalgisa and Ivory Tower.

One for the road: Idle since Feb. 22, Bijou returns to the scene of her maiden win in today’s eighth at Saratoga. The Cozzene filly, owned by Gary Zwerling and trained by Phil Hauswald, won by a neck over the local turf as a 3-year-old in 2002. She could be a decent price in the $50,000 allowance at 1 1/16 miles.

Exotically speaking: A pick four using Sunny Outcome, Amiable Amy, Tender Teen and Fresal in the fifth, Life’s Pleasures and Expressway in the sixth, singling Garden in the Rain in the seventh and The Herc, Fierce Knight and Aerojack in the eighth.
