Hollywood Fund-Raiser Presents a Fat Target

Regarding Michael Ramirez’s editorial cartoon showing a “meeting” of the “self-important Hollywood liberal elite” (Commentary, Dec. 4): I don’t loathe or even hate George W. Bush. I do alternate between alarm, disgust, bewilderment and occasional anger at his policies regarding the environment, gun control, choice for women, civil unions for committed adults and who gets the real tax benefits.

All of these reactions are there regarding his smug, self-righteous “no plan, no clue” actions in Iraq. Every day, soldiers and civilians are being killed. Why don’t you draw a cartoon about that, Mr. Ramirez?

Re “Hollywood Political Event Stirs Up Storm,” Dec. 3: It fascinates me that, after the elements of the political right spent the entirety of President Clinton’s two terms in office using every means at their disposal, fair and foul, but mostly foul, to oppose him, they have the audacity to squawk because the left is organizing in opposition to the dubiously elected sitting president. Not organizing to play equally dirty tricks, mind you, but doing what the Constitution guarantees all Americans have the right to do -- speaking out against the policies and actions of our government.

What hypocrisy! Bush plans to have something like $200 million in his campaign chest, and the right is screaming about this fund-raiser. Why is it not fair for liberals to raise money to defeat Bush but it is perfectly fine for the right to have all they have? What about those “Rangers” and “Pioneers”? Are we really to become just one big United States of Republicans? All day Wednesday on the AM dial, Larry Elder, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh were frothing at the mouth over this event while Bush was out on the road raising an additional $3 million.
