CKE Restaurants Inc., which operates the Carl’s Jr. chain, reported net income of $2.2 million, or 4 cents a share, for the third quarter ended Nov. 3, down from $9.5 million, or 16 cents a share, for the same quarter last year.

Sales were $334.8 million, up from $312.8 million.

The Santa Barbara company said 2002 earnings were boosted by a federal income tax benefit and the sale of its Checkers chain. The company operates 3,284 restaurants in 44 states and 14 countries, including 1,003 Carl’s Jr. outlets.
