Ventura County officials Monday celebrated the opening of a new drop-off recycling center for used motor oil from farm machinery.

The center is at LBL Equipment, 4755 E. Los Angeles Ave. in Somis. It will be open 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesdays.

Oil recycling -- A brief article in some editions of Tuesday’s California section about a new recycling center in Somis contained two errors. The center, which accepts used motor oil from farm machinery, will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, not 9 to 11 a.m. In addition, two other Ventura County recycling centers, in Oxnard and Fillmore, accept 55-gallon drums of oil, not five gallons per visit.

This is the third motor oil recycling center that the county has opened with a $600,000 state grant, officials said. The others, in Oxnard and Fillmore, can accept up to five gallons per visit.

The Somis facility is different because it is exclusively for agricultural machinery oil and can accept up to 50 gallons per visit, officials said. Drop-offs are free.

The center is specifically intended to help small and medium-size farmers recycle. Large farm operators generally store waste oil in large tanks and contract for disposal or recycling.

“This program makes oil recycling economical and convenient, avoiding accidental spills and illegal dumping, thus protecting our agricultural lands,” said Peter Kaiser, manager of pollution prevention for the county’s Environmental & Energy Resources Department.
