In November, almost 2,900 acres of rolling oak savanna became ours when the Santa Monica Conservancy purchased this parcel on the southeastern edge of Ventura County. The drama over developing this land -- cherished by the Chumash, who first claimed it -- rivals that of the many Westerns filmed there. In the end, preservationists ran the bulldozers off the ranch.
