The Rules, for bears only

True Grizz

Sierra Club Books, $24.95

One of the curiosities of the 21st century is that we find ourselves sorely in need of some sober-sided thinking about how to coexist on our crowded planet with lethal predators.

Who could have guessed?

For all but an eye-blink of the human record, we’ve sought to extirpate anything regarded as competition. Only in the last generation has there been a significant change of heart. Douglas H. Chadwick, wildlife biologist, author and naturalist, takes the side here of Ursus arctos horribilis but in documented, real-life terms. You could call it an ursine version of “Police Story” -- case study accounts of how errant bears come afoul of The Rules and how they are “schooled” to mind their ways.

Chadwick debunks many myths, beginning with the idea that all bears are alike. He explores the distinct personalities of individual grizzlies. The reader follows along as scientists employ Karelian dogs, firecrackers and more to “educate” bears to stay clear of people and all their easy pickings. Along the way, he succeeds in educating us about the true nature of this grand creature.
