Purported Al Qaeda Tape Threatens U.S.
An audiotape purportedly from Osama bin Laden’s deputy, aired on Arab television, warns that Al Qaeda would target Americans “in their homeland” and would drive U.S. forces from bases in the Middle East.
The Al Jazeera TV station broadcast excerpts from a 10-minute tape that it said was recorded by Ayman Zawahiri, the No. 2 figure in the terrorist network.
The station’s editors said they received the tape Friday by mail. The speaker notes a visit to Iraq by U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul D. Wolfowitz, which took place in late October, but does not mention last weekend’s capture of ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.
