Maple Leafs’ Streak Hits 15

Gary Roberts scored twice as the Toronto Maple Leafs extended their franchise-record points streak to 15 games with a 5-2 victory over the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night at Toronto.

The win, plus Philadelphia’s loss to the New York Islanders, moved Toronto into first place overall in the NHL. The Maple Leafs haven’t led the league in points this late in the season since 1962-63.

Nik Antropov had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who haven’t lost in regulation since Nov. 20 at Edmonton.

Toronto is 13-0-1-1 during the stretch.

Toronto goalie Ed Belfour made 29 saves, including an impressive stop on Niklas Hagman, who was alone at the side of the net midway through the second period.

Phoenix 2, Columbus 1 -- David Tanabe scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period and Ladislav Nagy had two assists to lead the Coyotes at Columbus, Ohio.

Rick Nash scored his 21st goal of the season for Columbus to open the scoring early in the second period. He is tied with Atlanta’s Ilya Kovalchuk for the NHL lead.

New York Islanders 4, Philadelphia 2 -- Jason Blake’s power-play goal with five minutes left and Garth Snow’s 34 saves led the Islanders to a victory over the Flyers at Uniondale, N.Y.

Chicago 3, St. Louis 0 -- At Chicago, Michael Leighton stopped 23 shots for his first shutout this season to lead the Blackhawks, who won for only the second time in their last 21 games (2-12-4-3).

Calgary 2, Edmonton 1 -- At Calgary, Canada, Rhett Warrener’s first goal in 100 games was the difference in the Flames’ fourth consecutive victory.

Minnesota 3, Nashville 3 -- The Wild’s Marian Gaborik broke a nine-game scoring drought with a goal at St. Paul, Minn., as Minnesota extended its season-high unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2).

Washington 3, Montreal 2 -- Peter Bondra scored with 53 seconds remaining to lift the Capitals to a home victory over the Canadiens.

Buffalo 2, Ottawa 2 -- Derek Roy scored his first NHL goal and the Sabres stopped a seven-game losing streak despite blowing a two-goal lead at Buffalo, N.Y.

Boston 1, Tampa Bay 1 -- Andre Roy’s first goal of the season 16 seconds into the third period at Boston gave the visiting Lightning a tie with the Bruins, who are 1-5-4-1 in their last 11 games.
