Is La Brea to Elloluv’s Liking?
Whoever takes the $250,000 La Brea Stakes today at Santa Anita will have to go some to match the accomplishments of last year’s winner.
Got Koko went on to win the El Encino Stakes and La Canada, becoming only the third filly to sweep the three-race La Canada Series.
Elloluv, a contender for the Eclipse award for 3-year-old filly, is the 2-1 morning line choice against nine others in the seven-furlong La Brea.
Elloluv, a daughter of Gilded Time who is trained by Craig Dollase for owner J. Paul Reddam, has been first or second in five of seven starts this year. One victory came in the Ashland, a Grade I, in April at Keeneland; she was the runner-up in three other Grade Is: the Las Virgenes, Santa Anita Oaks and the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.
The 5-1 second choice is Atlantic Ocean. Owned by the Thoroughbred Corp. and trained by Bob Baffert, she has made her last four starts on the turf but has done most of her winning on dirt.
Race of the day: Silent Sighs, second to House Of Fortune in the California Cup Juvenile Fillies, will be a short price to win the $125,000 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes. The seven-furlong race for 2-year-old fillies also lured Nicole And Ben, Yearly Report, Free’s Lil Lass, Remembrances and Pulchritude.
One for the road: Patriot’s Song, who won by 18 1/2 lengths the last time he ran on dirt, could get the right trip in today’s $75,000 Gallant Fox Handicap at Aqueduct. Mike Luzzi will ride the 4-year-old Sultry Song colt for trainer Bruce Levine in the 1 5/8-mile race.
Exotically speaking: A trifecta in the eighth keying Gold Sphinx on top, the Private War-Vacamonte entry, F J’s Pace and Hemet Thought in the two hole and all in the third spot.
Winners: Previous day/meet total: 3/3. Money: Previous day/meet total: $17/$17. Total money bet: $18.
