From Staff and Wire Reports

Quarterback Brett Favre returned to the Green Bay Packers on Friday, two days after his father’s funeral, and the focus for himself as well as his teammates was squarely on football.

Favre practiced for the first time since he’d led the Packers to a 41-7 victory at Oakland on Monday night, a day after his father’s death.

“Obviously, he had some catching up to do,” Coach Mike Sherman said. “But he’s been doing this for quite a long time. So, he probably had less catching up to do than most players would.”

The Packers (9-6) probably will need to beat the playoff-bound Denver Broncos on Sunday in Lambeau Field to earn a playoff berth.

Favre wasn’t available for comment after practice.

Pro Bowl linebacker LaVar Arrington has agreed to an eight-year, $80-million contract extension with the Washington Redskins, his agent said.

Carl Poston said the deal included $26.5 million in bonuses, most of which become available immediately. Under Arrington’s current contract, he would have earned slightly less than $10 million in salary and bonuses for the next three seasons.

Arrington was selected to his third consecutive Pro Bowl last week.

Daniel Snyder, the principal owner of the Redskins, has turned the franchise into one of the most powerful economic engines in professional sports, the Washington Post reported.

Under Snyder, the franchise has earned an estimated $70 million a year -- before taxes and interest payments -- on revenues of more than $200 million.

In addition, Forbes magazine estimated that the franchise Snyder bought for $800 million might now sell for nearly $1 billion.
