An orchestra by any other name

So its full name is Pacific Symphony Orchestra after all. When the term “Orange County’s Pacific Symphony” showed up recently in official announcements and as part of the orchestra’s new, 25th-anniversary season logo, some people began wondering. To answer inquiries, management sent out a note saying the board had changed the name “to make a closer connection with Orange County residents to thank them for 25 years of support.”

But that’s not entirely true. Or false.

“The corporate name is just changed to Pacific Symphony,” the organization’s president, John Forsyte, said last week, using the customary shorthand. “We eliminated the word ‘association,’ which made no sense for a symphony orchestra. We actually thought that ‘symphony orchestra’ is more precise.

“The words ‘Orange County apostrophe s’ are part of our logo. It identifies and acknowledges the relationship we feel we have with the Orange County community. We decided to unveil that during the 25th anniversary of the symphony. That’s who we serve, and without the leaders of this county, we simply wouldn’t be here. It was a recognition of that fact. We answer the phone, ‘Orange County’s Pacific Symphony.’

“But the correct, corporate name is Pacific Symphony. Or you can use ‘Orange County’s Pacific Symphony.’ ”

Until further notice.
