A magical death wish

Jeff Salz’s piece, “Want Christmas? Seek Out the Devil” (Dec. 23) should have run with a warning. When I was young and stupid, I went on a solo winter hike up Mt. San Gorgonio that was much like Salz’s adventure. The mountains in winter are magical. They can also be unforgiving. Even with proper gear, such a hike is dangerous.
