Why So Cynical About the Crystal Cathedral?

Share

Re “Believing in magic may take a miracle,” Jan. 3:

I take umbrage at the sarcasm and cynicism of the Al Martinez column on the “Glory of Christmas” production at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove.

The cathedral is not garish as Al notes, but quite beautiful and an honor to God paid for by donations, I believe free and clear when opening day arrived. Referencing Halloween, Thanksgiving and Monday Night Football as not having a “glory of” along with Dr. Robert Schuller’s Christmas and Easter at the Cathedral is, even if tongue and cheek, way out of line and definitely in poor taste.

The people I have taken to these productions came away entertained and inspired with a new or increased spiritual lift, courtesy of the mostly volunteer cast and production crews. Kudos to Schuller for the foresight to provide hope, faith and a godly closeness to a worldwide audience.

Mr. Martinez, I’m not sure what God you believe in. That’s your business. But your article stating that believing in magic may take a miracle actually does provide a truth in that God does provide miracles every day and, yes, it may seem like magic, especially to the nonbeliever.

Here’s an invitation for you to attend a few Sunday services and investigate the outreach programs available for a much-needed and enlightened perspective by you.

You may be inspired. I am.
