Fuzzy Zoeller matched the course record with a nine-under-par 63 Saturday to take a share of the second-round lead in the MasterCard Championship at Kaupulehu-Kona, Hawaii.

Zoeller had an eagle and four consecutive birdies on the back nine at Hualalai Golf Club to tie Larry Nelson and first-round co-leader Dana Quigley at 13-under 131 in the season-opening Champions Tour event.

Nelson, winless last year, shot a bogey-free 64, and Quigley birdied No. 18 for the second day in a row as part of three closing birdies to card a 65.

Hale Irwin, last year’s money leader and player of the year, struggled with his putter and shot 71 to drop into 14th place at 137.

Bruce Lietzke had three eagles in a round of 65, only the fourth time that has happened in senior golf. Gary Player, 67, matched his age one day after 73-year-old Arnold Palmer accomplished the feat.

Nick Faldo moved into position for his first victory since 1997, shooting a seven-under to take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the Heineken Classic at Melbourne, Australia.

The 45-year-old Englishman, a six-time major champion, had an 11-under 205 total on the Royal Melbourne course. Australia’s Peter Lonard (67), Sweden’s Niclas Fasth (68) and England’s Paul Casey (74) were tied for second.

“It will be great to go out and show them that there’s still plenty of the old Faldo in me,” said Faldo, winless since the PGA Tour’s 1997 Nissan Open. “I’ll go and do the best job I can.”
