Events Preempted by Coverage of Tragedy
Although it was a relatively light day of network sports programming Saturday, news reports covering the space shuttle Columbia tragedy caused a few preemptions.
CBS preempted a college basketball game between Indiana and Louisville that was scheduled to be shown at 10 a.m., and also preempted nearly an hour of its Bob Hope Classic golf coverage.
After CBS switched to the golf, Channel 2 ran a crawl at the bottom of the screen alerting viewers to the news coverage on sister station Channel 9.
NBC preempted the taped Freestyle Skiing World Championships, scheduled to be shown at 1 p.m. That coverage will replace the freestyle skiing scheduled for today at 10 a.m., and the coverage scheduled for today will be shown Feb. 22, an NBC spokesman said.
ABC televised taped coverage of the Winter X Games and the European Figure Skating Championships on Saturday afternoon as scheduled.
Sports on cable television outlets were not affected.
