Stanford Holds Off California

Nicole Powell scored nine of her 19 points in the last 5:44 and also had 10 rebounds as sixth-ranked Stanford held off rival California, 53-50, on Saturday at Berkeley.

Stanford beat California for the fourth straight time and 19th in 20 meetings. It was also the 10th straight win for the Cardinal, which improved to 17-2 overall and 9-1 in the Pacific 10 Conference, at Haas Pavilion.

The Bears (7-12, 3-7) were in the game until going cold on offense late, and allowing Stanford to score 13 unanswered points. Powell also had an assist down the stretch and a blocked shot when Cal had a five-on-three fast break in the final minute.

Cal’s Sarah Pool missed a three-point shot at the buzzer.

The teams played for the second time in four days, and Stanford was coming off one of its best defensive efforts of the season in the 72-48 home victory Wednesday.

Kristin Iwanaga scored 12 points and Leigh Gregory had 11 for the Bears, who had a season-low 11 turnovers.

No. 3 Kansas State 74, No. 19 Oklahoma 45 -- Kendra Wecker scored 24 points at Norman, Okla., and the Wildcats (19-2, 6-1) rebounded from an upset loss with a Big 12 Conference victory over the Sooners (13-7, 4-3).

Kansas State had lost to unranked Iowa State, 74-69, on Wednesday, ending its 13-game winning steak.

Oklahoma made only 30.5% from the field in its most lopsided defeat since a 101-72 loss at home to Nebraska on Feb. 14, 1998.

No. 8 Texas Tech 84, Kansas 57 -- Plenette Pierson scored 29 points and had six rebounds to lead the Red Raiders (18-2, 7-1) to the Big 12 victory over the Jayhawks (9-10, 2-6) at Lawrence, Kan.

Pierson had a career-high 32 points earlier this week in an 84-50 victory over Missouri. She had another strong showing against Kansas going 11 of 14 from the field and making seven of nine shots from the free-throw line.

No. 9 Louisiana Tech 68, Texas El Paso 53 -- Cheryl Ford had 19 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Lady Techsters (17-2, 9-0) to the Western Athletic Conference victory over the Aggies (9-10, 4-5) at El Paso.

Amber Obaze and Amisha Carter each had 13 points to help Louisiana Tech extend its winning streak to 15 games.

The Lady Techsters pulled away with a 21-6 run in the first nine minutes of the second half.

No. 20 Villanova 61, Miami 55 -- Trish Juhline scored all 15 of her points for the Wildcats (15-4, 5-3) in the second half for the Big East Conference victory over the Hurricanes (13-6, 5-3) at Coral Gables, Fla.

No. 21 Wisconsin Green Bay 97, Illinois Chicago 56 -- Chandra Johnson scored 20 points and the Phoenix (17-3, 8-1) rolled over the Flames (11-8, 5-4) in a Horizon League game at Green Bay, Wis.

No. 24 Arizona 71, Oregon 66 -- Freshman Shawntinice Polk had 23 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Wildcats (14-4, 7-4) over the Ducks (8-12, 4-7) in a Pac-10 game at Eugene, Ore. Brandi Davis led the Ducks with 21 points.
