Parts of Moorpark Road Renamed
Two portions of old Moorpark Road will be renamed to prevent confusion among firefighters and other motorists who drive the route to Moorpark.
The renaming will follow a $5-million realignment intended to eliminate a dogleg that creates dangerous 90-degree turns, said Butch Britt, director of the county Transportation Department.
The Ventura County Board of Supervisors approved the renaming Tuesday, the first such change in a decade.
The north-south portion of the road will be called Sunset Valley Road, and the east-west stretch will be called Read Road, because it joins up with the existing Read Road.
The county consulted with the cities of Moorpark and Thousand Oaks and sought input from residents to come up with the names, Britt said
The realignment project entails building a new stretch of Moorpark Road from Santa Rosa Road to Tierra Rejada Road. It is expected to be completed in March. The names will take effect when the new route opens, Britt said.
County fire officials told the Transportation Department that changing the road names would help prevent confusion and save time in emergencies.
About 16,000 vehicles drive on the two-lane Moorpark Road each day, Britt said.
