Devil’s Horn Resurfaces

Share

Winless in six starts on the main track, Devil’s Horn has had all of his success on Santa Anita’s unique hillside turf course.

A 6-year-old Skywalker gelding owned and trained by Eugene Burnison, Devil’s Horn has won three of four at the about 6 1/2-furlong distance and each of his wins was by daylight. The average margin of victory has been three lengths.

Back in today’s feature, a $57,000 optional claimer at his favorite trip, Devil’s Horn could start a new win streak under jockey Tyler Baze.

His main threat could be Thunder Bullet, who comes from the hot Jeff Mullins barn and who has also demonstrated a fondness for the course.

The 4-year-old gelding won by three lengths in 1:12 on Jan. 17 and was beaten by a head in his only other start down the hill last fall. Julie Krone will ride.

The rest of the field includes Primerica, Ulterior Motives, Golden Dragon, Late Night Out, Mr Toad, Splendid Times and McCordnskuba.

Race of the day: Consistency, a son of Unbridled out of the stakes-winning mare Top Rung, will make his first start against winners in today’s fifth at Gulfstream Park. The 4-year-old broke his maiden by nine lengths in his bow Jan. 8 for the Glen Hill Farm and trainer Tom Proctor. Jerry Bailey again will ride the colt, scheduled to face eight others at seven furlongs.

Who’s hot: Tim Hills. The trainer won with six of his first 22 starters at Gulfstream Park.

Who’s not: Cesar Bisono. The jockey lost with 84 of his first 87 mounts at Golden Gate Fields.

Exotically speaking: A trifecta in the third keying Urgent Start and Shescominundone on top, those two plus Irish Slew in the second spot and all in the third spot.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 1/83. Money: Previous day/meet total: $4.80/$507.40. Total money bet: $530.
