Tiger Woods said Thursday he will play his first tournament of the year next week at the Buick Invitational, where he expects to ask Phil Mickelson what he meant by his comments about Woods’ equipment.

Woods officially committed to the tournament at Torrey Pines and made the announcement on his Web site, where he also responded to the issue of Mickelson and what he may think about the quality of Woods’ Nike clubs and balls.

“Apparently, Phil Mickelson has suggested I might be playing with inferior equipment,” Woods said on Tigerwoods.com. “I heard it was said in fun and jest, but until I talk to him, I really don’t know. When I find out, I’ll get a better perspective.”

Mickelson is also entered at Torrey Pines.

The Mickelson-Woods debate is not only about the relationship of the players but is probably more about the high-stakes battle between equipment heavyweights Titleist and Nike.

Mickelson endorses Titleist. Woods previously endorsed Titleist but changed to the Nike ball three years ago, the driver two years ago and the irons last September.

In an interview published in Golf magazine, Mickelson said Woods “has inferior equipment.”

Mickelson, who arrived Wednesday night at Pebble Beach and did not play a practice round, did not deny his comments, but he said he was joking.

“Phil is entitled to his opinion, but as everyone knows, I don’t switch equipment until I find something as good or better than I was playing with, and my Nike products are just that,” Woods said. “Quite frankly, questioning my equipment is foolish ....I really don’t worry about other players or what they think. The real measuring stick on the PGA Tour is how much you win.”

Woods said he played 18 holes Tuesday for the first time since he had surgery Dec. 12.

After his 72 at Poppy Hills on Thursday, Mickelson said the issue has not damaged his association with Woods.

“I don’t think there’s anything that will strain the relationship,” Mickelson said. “I’m sure it’ll come up though.”
