Palos Verdes Peninsula High Wins County Academic Title
Palos Verdes Peninsula High School captured first place in the Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon, according to results announced Friday.
Peninsula High, which has won the county competition three times before, will join top teams from the Los Angeles Unified School District and throughout California at the state finals March 7-8 in Modesto.
Peninsula won the county tournament with a score of 43,081 out of a possible 60,000. Placing behind it were Beverly Hills, Redondo Union, Saugus and El Rancho high schools.
On Thursday, Taft High School won the L.A. Unified decathlon competition. (The school district is so large that it gets its own division.) Teams from Marshall, El Camino Real, Los Angeles, North Hollywood, Reseda, Palisades Charter, Venice and San Pedro high schools earned wild-card spots for the state tournament.
The U.S. Academic Decathlon tests students’ abilities in a variety of subjects. California and Texas teams have always battled each other for the national title. This year’s national finals will be held April 23-26 in Erie, Pa.
