Pick-Six Players Look for Windfall in Rainfall

The bad weather of Tuesday was expected to be followed by even worse weather today, so something special was needed to lure fans to Santa Anita or any of its local simulcast sites this afternoon.

Thanks primarily to Bourbon County, who paid $130.20 while winning Sunday’s eighth race, the track, which has enjoyed idyllic conditions through the first seven weeks of its winter-spring meet, got the boost it needed.

A pick-six carry-over of $201,595 awaits those willing to brave the elements as Santa Anita begins a six-day week of racing.

There are no turf races in the pick six, so fans won’t have to deal with a surface change, but they will have to contend with what will probably be a sloppy main track for the first time in about two months.

The bettors also will be dealing with three maiden claiming races -- two of them sprints at 6 1/2 furlongs and the other a route (one mile) for 3-year-old fillies bred in California.

The remaining three races in the pick six are a $56,000 allowance at a mile for 3-year-old fillies, a 5 1/2-furlong sprint for $12,500 fillies and mares and a $61,000 optional claimer for older horses at 6 1/2 furlongs.

Aqueduct also has a pick-six carry-over today, but good luck trying to play it in Arcadia.

The first race from New York that players can bet at Santa Anita is the fourth. The pick six begins with the third.

Race of the day: American System, who was a close third in the opening-day Malibu Stakes before bombing as the favorite less than three weeks later, will try to rebound for trainer Eduardo Inda in today’s seventh at Santa Anita. The race also attracted Stormy Jack, Hasty Kris and Joey Franco, among others.

Who’s hot: Bruce Headley. The trainer swept the La Canada Series with Got Koko, who became only the third 4-year-old filly to do so, and he has won with nine of 29 starters at Santa Anita. Headley doesn’t have any starters on today’s card.

Who’s not: Isaias Enriquez and Omar Berrio. The two jockeys are a combined five for 110 at Santa Anita.

Exotically speaking: A pick three singling Siberian Style in the fourth, using My Babycakes, Perfect Woman, Toast Of The Year, The Candi Queen and Lexi’s Habit in the fifth and Termination and Banker Boy in the sixth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 1/93. Money: Previous day/meet total: $4/$561.60. Total money bet: $598.
