Oxnard OKs Funds for Prosecutor

The Oxnard City Council has approved spending $57,700 to supplement the cost of providing a full-time prosecutor to the Police Department’s gang-suppression program.

State funds for the program, credited with helping prosecute dozens of gang members and keeping crime down throughout the region, were cut by 33% through the end of the fiscal year because of a revenue shortfall.

The Board of Supervisors declined a request by the district attorney in December to make up the difference. But the Oxnard City Council voted this week to support the program.

“The city of Oxnard recognizes the important benefits of programs like this,” Dist. Atty. Greg Totten said. “Their decision to maintain this program sends a strong message that city leaders will not tolerate gang violence in their community.”
