From Times Staff Reports

The City Council has approved spending $57,700 to supplement the cost of providing a full-time prosecutor to the Police Department’s gang-suppression program.

State funds for the program, which were credited with helping prosecute dozens of gang members and keeping crime down throughout the region, were cut by 33% through the end of the fiscal year because of a budget deficit.

The Board of Supervisors declined a request by the district attorney in December to make up the difference.

But the Oxnard City Council voted this week to support the program.
