A 21-year-old Cal State Northridge student has been arrested and charged in the sexual assault of a female student near campus, police announced Thursday.

Ervin Standifer III of Los Angeles, who faces 23 felony counts of sexual assault, burglary, indecent exposure and failing to register as a sex offender, was arrested Dec. 10 and charged Jan. 30, police said.

“Public notification of his arrest was postponed until the investigators completed witness interviews and a live lineup,” Officer Jason Lee of the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Standifer, an unregistered sex offender, had been out on bail in an indecent exposure case in Hawthorne. He allegedly assaulted an 18-year-old female student Nov. 21, Lee said.

A break in the case came when a composite drawing of the suspect was shown to a campus police detective.

“We showed it to CSUN Det. Sgt. Dana Archer and he noted the resemblance to a CSUN student, who they had been investigating for a couple of indecent exposure incidents that had occurred in the campus student housing area,” said LAPD Det. John Alviani of the Robbery-Homicide Division.

Investigators arrested Standifer outside one of his classes, Alviani said. If convicted, he could get life in prison.
