Gold Mover Is Going for Gold at Gulfstream

Share

These are tough times at Santa Anita.

Things are so bad right now that even Golden Gate Fields has more entrants (67) in its eight races today than does Santa Anita (56).

Those looking for fuller fields are advised to turn their attention to Gulfstream Park, where 94 horses were entered in 10 races.

While the richest race on the program in Arcadia is a $70,000 allowance where three of the five entrants have combined for one victory since the beginning of 2002, the main event at Gulfstream Park is a Grade III stakes. Six fillies and mares will go seven furlongs in the $100,000 Shirley Jones Handicap, including Gulfstream specialist Gold Mover.

Owned and bred by Edward Evans and trained by Mark Hennig, the 5-year-old Gold Fever mare has picked up four of her five victories at Gulfstream and she was second in her lone loss there. Jerry Bailey will ride Gold Mover, who will break from the rail as she looks for her fourth victory at seven furlongs. This will be her first race since she won the Safely Kept on the Breeders’ Cup undercard Oct. 26 at Arlington Park.

The only member of the lineup with a victory at the current meet is Harmony Lodge. The 5-year-old Hennessy mare won the First Lady Handicap on Jan. 12 for owners Eugene and Laura Melnyk and trainer Todd Pletcher.

Preferred Option, Nonsuch Bay, who won the Mother Goose last year at Belmont Park, Away and Forest Heiress round out the field for the Shirley Jones.

Race of the day: Reef Chief, John Little, My Man Ryan and Yankee Doodle Boy, who have combined for 13 victories on Aqueduct’s inner track, head the field of seven in today’s eighth in New York, a $56,000 allowance at one mile.

Who’s hot: Catherine Robinson. The Maryland-based trainer won with nine of her first 14 starters at Laurel.

Who’s not: Bill McLean. The trainer lost with 58 of his first 60 starters at Golden Gate Fields.

Exotically speaking: A Santa Anita pick four using Proven Form, Woman Onfasttrack and The Castle in the fifth, Shellys Terms and Prefer Blondes in the sixth, Cottage and National Saint in the seventh and singling Castlebright in the eighth.
