Stevens Makes Return After Going Hollywood

Share

For the first time since the Breeders’ Cup on Oct. 26 at Arlington Park near Chicago, jockey Gary Stevens will be back at his chosen profession.

For the last several months, Stevens, a member of racing’s Hall of Fame, has been busy playing George Woolf in the movie “Seabiscuit,” which is based on the wildly popular book. The movie is scheduled for release July 25.

Stevens has five mounts on his first day back at Santa Anita and none of the horses he’s riding will be favored. He’ll be aboard Rock N Rosh in the second, Fly To The Wire in the third, European import Zanakar in the fifth, Se Me Acabo in the $200,000 Santa Maria Handicap, which is the sixth on the card, and Winsome Prose in the ninth.

Winless in six starts in the U.S. and from a barn (Eduardo Inda) that has yet to win a race at the Santa Anita meet, Se Me Acabo will be the longest shot in a Santa Maria that figures to be dominated by You and Starrer.

You, who has won six of 13 since being purchased privately by trainer Bobby Frankel for owner Ed Gann, will be making her 13th consecutive start in a Grade I today.

In a race that doesn’t figure to have much pace, the daughter of You and I is the one to catch under jockey Kent Desormeaux.

Race of the day: Indy Dancer, who has won both of his starts for the Wertheimer Farm and trainer Todd Pletcher, will make his graded stakes debut in the $150,000 Risen Star at the Fair Grounds. John Velasquez will ride the son of A.P. Indy against a field that also includes Badge Of Silver, Seattle Hoofer and Saintly Look.

Who’s hot: Laffit Pincay Jr. The world’s winningest jockey keeps rolling along. He won three of the final four races on Friday’s card and he was at his best aboard Skip To The Stone in the seventh.

Who’s not: Jose Caraballo. The Laurel-based rider lost with 58 of his first 60 mounts at the Maryland track.

Exotically speaking: A pick four singling You in the sixth, using Daunting, J.T.’s Song and Moving’s Gold in the seventh, Pacific Colony, Marshall Rooster and Foreign Accent in the eighth and Borasca, Styler and Shining Strike in the ninth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 4/100. Money: Previous day/meet total: $23.60/$599.40. Total money bet: $664.
