Most of the winning films at two award shows this weekend were familiar contenders from the recent spate of nominations and honors being handed out to the movie class of 2002. But there was one surprise victor that hasn’t been included on many “best” lists: “Sorority Boys.”

That Touchstone Pictures comedy, about three young men who dress up in drag to join a sorority, was honored Sunday at the fourth annual Hollywood Makeup and Hair Stylist Guild Awards. It was deemed to have the best contemporary hairstyling for a feature film, with Donna Gilbert and Joanne Harris sharing the award.

Meanwhile, the American Society of Cinematographers on Sunday gave its top award in the feature film category to the late Conrad L. Hall for “Road to Perdition.” It was accepted by his son, cinematographer Conrad W. Hall.

“I guess if you’re going to go, [it’s good] to go out on top,” he said.

Conrad L. Hall, who died in January, previously had been honored by his fellow cinematographers for “Tequila Sunrise” (1988), “Searching for Bobby Fischer” (1993) and “American Beauty” (1999).

The cinematographers also honored Robert Primes for an episode of ABC’s “MDs” and Michael Barrett for the pilot for CBS’ “CSI: Miami.”

“The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” picked up three awards from the Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild: best character makeup for a feature film (Peter King); best special makeup for a feature film (Gino Acevedo, Jason Docerty, Richard Taylor, Elijah Wood) and best character hairstyling for a feature film (King, Peter Owen, Liv Tyler).

Other film winners: “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” (Ann Brodie) for best contemporary makeup; “Chicago” (Samuel Jordan, Patricia Keighran, Edelgard Pfuegl) for best period makeup; and “Gangs of New York” (Aldo Signoretti) for best period hairstyling.

In TV, ABC’s “Alias” won for both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while NBC’s “American Dreams” won both the corresponding period categories.
