From Times Wire Reports

Citizens in the central state of Mexico overwhelmingly approved a nonbinding referendum in support of putting kidnappers, armed robbers and murderers to death, sparking wide debate on the country’s long opposition to capital punishment.

President Vicente Fox spoke out against the results, saying he opposed the death penalty under any circumstances.

About 800,000 people voted by phone, on the Internet and at about 600 polling places. The poll was sponsored by two opposition parties, the Institutional Revolutionary Party and the Green Party.
