Number of Car Thefts Shoots Up 34%

Car thieves made off with 34% more cars last year than in 2001 in Sonoma County.
By comparison, car thefts were up 11% statewide for the same period.
Some 1,435 cars vanished last year countywide, with almost half coming from the streets of Santa Rosa. While thefts were soaring, arrests were tumbling. Officers made 112 arrests for car theft last year, compared to 150 in 2001.
