Beach May Ban Vehicles on Pot Smokers’ Day

From Staff and Wire Reports

Humboldt County officials asked the Board of Supervisors this week to close Clam Beach on April 20 -- at least to vehicles -- because hundreds of marijuana smokers gathered there last year for what’s known as 420 Day.

The term 420 refers to marijuana, although its origin is the subject of numerous theories. Humboldt County is said to be the state’s premier pot-growing area.

The Western snowy plover, an endangered coastal seabird, nests on the beach during the spring, and the county says it doesn’t have enough staff to monitor the 420 Day celebrants.
