Capistrano Unified Ignores Voters on High School; City Stands Idly By

Re “San Juan Capistrano Group Vows to Block New High School,” Feb. 1:

I have read with disgust about the recent actions of our school board and its staff here in the Capistrano Unified School District. I have sought the help of my city representatives and their staff to what appears to be no avail. I have requested that the City Council consider legal action against the school district.

The council originally approved an ordinance rezoning the property referred to as Whispering Hills by adopting a plan that provided for residential development and the construction of a high school.

On Nov. 5, the matter was put before the voters, and they overturned the council’s action.

The school district has chosen to move forward with the construction of the high school, claiming it does not have to comply with local zoning for either the area in which the school is proposed or the undeveloped area remaining. Our city is doing nothing to stop it when the council knows it can.

It is unbelievable that citizens who work through a democratic process, exercising their rights, are ignored by our school board and City Council.
