Cold Wave Kills at Least 100 People
A cold wave has killed at least 100 people in India in little more than a week, officials said.
At least 89 people have died in Uttar Pradesh state as a result of exposure. Eleven have died in neighboring Bihar state.
Recently, the overnight temperature has dipped as low as 43 degrees. Such cool weather can be fatal in India, where millions live without heat, electricity and warm clothing. Officials have started supplying wood for bonfires on street corners, and aid groups have been distributing blankets and plastic sheeting.
