Malcolm X papers get home

The largest known collection of personal writings by the slain black militant leader Malcolm X, which was almost sold at auction last year, will be housed at a research center for black culture in New York.
Two of Malcolm X’s six daughters announced that the collection, which includes Malcolm X’s personal Koran, will be placed at the New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The family and estate retains all ownership rights.
The agreement culminates a legal battle to stop a sale of the collection by an anonymous individual in Florida. The family reached a deal to stop the sale with the individual, who initially bought the collection from a Public Storage locker facility in Florida, and with the online auction house EBay Inc. and EBay’s Butterfields auction house, which had been consigned to handle the sale. The collection had been estimated to fetch between $300,000 and $500,000 at auction.
