Academic Testing for Student-Athletes

Share

Re “A Misguided Change on University Athlete Admissions,” Commentary, Jan. 7: Steven Sample is absolutely correct in decrying the National Collegiate Athletic Assn.’s elimination of the requirement for a minimum SAT or ACT score for student-athletes who seek entry into the nation’s Division I collegiate athletic programs. Without such a standard, there’s absolutely no way to ensure that students recruited for their athletic prowess will be able to succeed in the classrooms of America’s more academically competitive institutions. That said, I’m now waiting to see if the USC president will demand that his own athletic department ignore the new NCAA rule change and continue to require a minimum test score for the athletes it recruits.
