Frank Gehry may be the country’s most famous architect, but the Santa Monica resident has no part in the competition to rebuild the World Trade Center site in New York. Why? The money, he says. “I was invited to be on one of the teams [in the competition], but I found it demeaning that the agency paid only $40,000 for all that work. I can understand why the kids did it, but why would people my age do it?” Gehry said last week in a New York Times interview. “When you’re only paid $40,000, you’re treated as if that is your worth.” So how much would it have taken to get Gehry in the game? A Gehry spokesman turned questions away last week, saying the WTC “is not a subject he wants to address” any further.
