U.S. officials stepped up their investigation of Ford Motor Co. Crown Victorias powered by compressed natural gas.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is raising its level of scrutiny after the agency reviewed a case in which a police car exploded after a crash in Wisconsin.

The probe is separate from an earlier one into 18 deaths linked to the gasoline-powered version of the sedan.

Separately, the National Assn. of Police Organizations Inc. sued the automaker saying a police version of the vehicle is defective. Ford said the vehicle meets safety standards.
