What: “Beyond the Glory”

When: Sunday, 9 p.m., Fox Sports Net; 10:30 p.m., Fox Sports Net 2

“Beyond the Glory,” diving into the difficult task of trying to capture the complicated life of Greg Louganis, scores high marks. This edition of the documentary series is sad in parts, uplifting at times and compelling throughout.

Louganis, who won 47 national diving titles and four Olympic gold medals, spent most of his life battling depression and self-doubt. Only in recent years has he been able to appreciate what he accomplished as a diver.

“I was watching my dives from previous competitions and I was crying,” he says. “That was the first time in my life that I gave myself credit for doing beautiful dives.”

The most troubling part of the show deals with Louganis’ six-year relationship with boyfriend and business manager Jim Babbitt, which began in 1982.

“The first year we were seeing each other he raped me at knifepoint,” Louganis says. “And I was convinced I deserved it.”

Louganis had a troubled childhood. His adoptive mother, Frances, who is interviewed throughout, says, “I’d say from about the time he was 4 years old, I didn’t think of it being gay, but I knew he was different.”

In his 1995 autobiography, Louganis acknowledged his homosexuality and said he attempted suicide three times.

These days, out of the limelight, Louganis is doing better. His health has been stable for years and he spends much of his time performing in theater productions and training show dogs.
