THANKS for characterizing Katharine Hepburn’s longtime affair with Spencer Tracy as “dignity personified” (“Hollywood Affair of the Heart,” by Charles Champlin, June 30). I’ve been trying to convince my wife that allowing me to carry on a decades-long affair, punctuated by frequent bouts of drunkenness with scenes of picking up my mistress from back doors while at the same time clinging to my religious beliefs would be similarly “dignified.”

She ain’t buying it.
