Davis Lives by Politics, Could Die by Politics

Re “Mr. President, Urge Republicans to End Davis Recall Bid,” Commentary, June 29: I find it humorous that Eli Broad, et al, sent an open letter through The Times urging President Bush to use his influence to stop the recall of Gov. Gray Davis. They suggest the recall is all about a small faction of Republicans forwarding their agenda. They further state that if the effort isn’t stopped, all decisions from Sacramento will become highly politicized.

Where have Broad, et al, been? Every single action taken by Davis is now and has always been political. Further, in California, if anyone is recalled, it will be an act by a combination of Republicans and Democrats. Republicans simply don’t have the numbers in this state to do anything by themselves.

Davis is the captain of ship California. The ship has been financially floundering for years. Regardless of what he has inherited, it’s his crew and he is the captain. California is in an economic battle of competition, and losing. You don’t replace the crew or revise policies or change course without changing the captain. We don’t need advice from Washington; we don’t need pressure from politicians. It may not be “fair,” it may not be the best timing, but the time has come. Replace the captain.

In any position, if an employee made a company go bankrupt by ineptitude, how long would it be before that person would be booted out? What is different for the person we elected to office; can we have the right to fire him? I would be in favor of voting for Arnold Schwarzenegger if he decided to run for governor, for the simple reason that he is very rich and maybe would be less apt to favor special interests.

Robert Scheer beautifully articulates the relationship between corrupt capitalism and the bankrupt condition of California (Commentary, July 1). Instead of recalling the governor, perhaps the Golden State’s disgruntled citizens could unite behind a movement of succession. As the song says, freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.
