Tombside gig displeases some

From staff and wire reports

Civil War buffs were not amused by a scantily clad Beyonce Knowles performing at Grant’s tomb, the New York Daily News reports.

The singer’s performance, a July 4 NBC special, has provoked Frank Scaturro, head of the Grant Memorial Assn., to write the National Park Service and ask for more dignified performances.

“I am glad there is more appreciation of this memorial than there once was,” he told the paper. “But this particular memorial also happens to be the man’s tomb.”

The tomb, in upper Manhattan, went from landmark to obscurity between the Civil War general’s 1885 death and the 1990s.

Now renovated and improved, the site has begun to host performances. “Actually, I didn’t think Bon Jovi was appropriate either,” said Scarturro.
