Navy OKs Giving Carrier Midway to Museum
The Navy gave a green light Tuesday for the donation of the historic aircraft carrier Midway to a San Diego group that plans to make it the centerpiece of a waterfront museum.
Acting Navy Secretary Hansford T. Johnson approved a request by the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum to turn the 1,001-foot-long ship into a $7-million floating museum, Pentagon officials announced in Washington.
The Navy expects to release the ship to the museum group in a few weeks, after final agreements are reached with the San Diego organization and the Environmental Protection Agency.
