Coax Kid to Debut on Grass

Share

Last seen chasing Toccet and the recently retired Kafwain in the Hollywood Futurity last Dec. 21, Coax Kid is scheduled to make his first start as a 3-year-old in tonight’s seventh at Hollywood Park.

A $48,000 allowance at 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf, it is the fifth race in a pick six with a carry-over of $90,254. The carry-over helps spice up an exceptionally weak card that drew only 54 entrants.

Owned by Royce Jaime and trained by Doug O’Neill, who is going to win the local training title, Coax Kid will be making his first start on the grass.

Before he finished third in the Futurity -- he actually crossed the wire fourth, but was moved up due to the disqualification of Kafwain -- the Kissin Kris colt broke his maiden going 1 1/16 miles on the Hollywood main. In his two one-turn races, he was third in his bow at Fairplex and second to Rahy Vision last fall at Santa Anita.

The field also includes Saint Lorenzo, who has won two in a row and is also trained by O’Neill, comebackers Penne Dancer and Bay Town Boy, longshot McManus and K O Love, who beat maidens by nine lengths in 1:08 1/5 in his debut at Bay Meadows on May 30.

Race of the day: Sixty Seconds, a Group I winner in Australia, will make her U.S. debut in today’s eighth, a $52,000 allowance at a mile on the turf, at Belmont Park. Jerry Bailey will ride the 5-year-old mare for trainer Christophe Clement.

One for the road: Flirting Ways, a daughter of A.P. Jet, will make her first start for trainer H. James Bond in today’s 10th at Belmont Park against a weak field of fillies and mares bred in New York. Bond gets a top rider in Edgar Prado and the trainer wins his fair share with rookies.

Exotically speaking: A pick all singling Speedy Pick in the first, Rio Reyes in the second, using Dancewithavictor and Sunnys Buddy in the third, singling Sharon’s Beau in the fourth, using La Bella Reina and Hostility in the fifth, Kissy Kat, Excess Star and Bella Sierra in the sixth, Bay Town Boy and K O Love in the seventh and singling Dareto in the eighth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 1/153. Money: Previous day/meet total: $9.20/$815.60. Total money bet: $982.
