The relatives of two people shot to death by a terrorist a year ago at Los Angeles International Airport filed lawsuits Monday against the city and the gunman’s estate seeking $85 million.

The wrongful-death suits filed in U.S. District Court seek compensation from the estate of Hesham Mohamed Hadayet, 41, who sprayed gunfire at Israel’s El Al airlines ticket counter on July 4, 2002, killing El Al employee Victoria Hen and passenger Yaakov Aminov and wounding several other people. Hadayet was shot to death by a security guard.

The suits contend that the city failed to provide adequate security prior to the shooting. They are based on federal laws that allow victims’ families to seek damages from the estates of terrorists, said attorney Richard Fine, who represents the families of Hen, Aminov and the others wounded in the attack.
