Explosion Kills 3, Hurts 38 Near Chechen Border
A bomb exploded near a police station in the troubled Dagestan region bordering Chechnya, killing a pregnant woman, a child and an officer, authorities said. They suggested Islamic militants were behind the blast in the city of Khasavyurt but didn’t immediately link the attack to Chechnya, where a nearly 4-year-old war continues.
Officials left open the possibility that the bombing, which also injured 38 people, could have been the result of a personnel dispute. The bomb, packed with nuts, bolts and ball bearings, was attached to a motorcycle or scooter.
