Grenades Kill 7 on Way to Mountaintop Shrine
Two grenades killed seven pilgrims and wounded 25 on their way to one of the most revered Hindu shrines in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir, police said. The explosions, which police blamed on Islamic guerrillas, occurred as thousands of people were climbing to the mountaintop shrine, Vaishno Devi.
Security has been tightened after intelligence reports that Islamic militants could target the shrine. Swami Chinmayananda, India’s junior interior minister, blamed Pakistan for the blasts. India frequently blames its South Asian rival for guerrilla attacks.
