Rogelio Cardenas Sarmiento, 51; Newspaper Editor
Rogelio Cardenas Sarmiento, 51, founding editor in chief of the respected Mexico City business news daily El Financiero, died Friday of glandular cancer at his home in the capital.
The son of a columnist for the Mexico City Excelsior newspaper, Cardenas graduated from Universidad Anahuac in Mexico City, then went to England to study at Cambridge and complete a master’s degree in economic development at the University of Sussex. When he returned home, he became a reporter for the news wire service Informex.
With his father, Rogelio Cardenas Perez, and colleague Alejandro Ramos, Cardenas founded Economic and Financial Information Services, a business news agency.
In 1981, Cardenas and Ramos established El Financiero. Cardenas remained an active editor until his death.
The tabloid-style financial publication, praised for its independence and aggressive reporting, has become one of Mexico’s most important papers.
Based in Mexico City, it has a circulation of 150,000.
