A 28-year-old woman who allegedly abducted her three children from their grandmother’s home in San Pedro on Saturday was arrested Sunday morning in Bakersfield by Los Angeles police, a spokeswoman said.

Janice Gay Ashley and a man who accompanied her were taken into custody about 9:20 a.m., and the children were found unharmed, said LAPD Officer Grace Brady.

Ashley and her companion, Wayne Nellums, 43, were to be returned to Los Angeles for booking late Sunday.

According to police, Ashley charged into the San Pedro home of her mother -- the children’s guardian -- about 9:45 p.m. Saturday, firing a gun.

“Apparently she showed up, she shot at the front door, somehow she made it in the house,” Brady said. “There was an altercation between her and her mother and another shot went off.” No one was hurt, Brady said.

Ashley left with her children in a car that officers believe was driven by Nellums, police said. She may have had acquaintances in the Bakersfield area and been trying to get to them, police said.

The children, who range in age from 2 to 7, will remain in the custody of Kern County’s Child Protective Services until further notice, Brady said.
