“Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over” surprised the experts by easily beating the competition. “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” saw its box office drop only 32% in its third week, while “Bad Boys II” fell 52% in its second week. The sequel “Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life” debuted in fourth place, grossing less than half what its original took in two years ago. And although “Seabiscuit” came in fifth, it had the best per-theater average among new wide releases with $10,485, which bodes well for the rest of its summer run.

It was also the first time in history that five films had grossed more than $20 million on the same weekend.

Meanwhile, films opening in limited release included “Lucia, Lucia,” $70,773; “Camp,” $54,294; “Masked and Anonymous,” $30,783; “Mondays in the Sun,” $22,401; and “Hotel,” $12,840.
