Democracy Activist Charged With Spying

A Chinese court has indicted a democracy activist on charges of spying for Taiwan and illegal entry and will try him behind closed doors next week, his wife said in Boston. Yang Jianli, 40, could be sentenced to death if convicted, Christina Fu said. Yang, a Chinese national and U.S. permanent resident, was detained in April 2002.
