Highway Widening on Track for Early Finish

From Staff and Wire Reports

Regional traffic officials celebrated Tuesday, seven months ahead of schedule, the near-completion of a $36-million effort to widen the Bayfront Expressway.

Work on signals at five intersections may take 10 more weeks, but the project is mostly done. The original timetable called for an April 2004 finish.

The California Department of Transportation initially estimated that it would take 550 working days, or two-plus years, to widen the highway from four lanes to six between the Dumbarton Bridge in East Palo Alto and Menlo Park. But when all the bids came in, contractors said they could finish in 340 days.
